About Jonathan Kembery

Jonathan is a Partner and our General Counsel.  He leads teams that enable the firm’s 5000 plus partners and staff worldwide to address the variety of regulatory, compliance and legal issues associated with providing complex, multi-jurisdictional professional services to clients. In addition, Jonathan manages the firm’s legal structure and its arrangements with partners, and has oversight of the firm’s information security capability.

Jonathan was a member of the City of London Law Society Professional Rules & Regulation Committee between 2008 and 2021 and chaired the Committee from 2017. He was a member of the Solicitors Regulation Authority Policy Committee between 2012 and 2016, and of the reference group for the Law Society review of the regulation of legal services in 2009. Currently Jonathan is involved with ethical initiatives on the part of The City of London Solicitors’ Company. Jonathan is also a long-time supporter of the hospice movement in the UK; presently serving as the Deputy-Chair of Royal Trinity Hospice and previously having been a trustee with Shooting Star Children's Hospices.

Jonathan is a regular speaker in the UK and internationally on ethics and compliance topics for law firms.

Qualifications

Jonathan graduated from Brasenose College, Oxford University in 1988 with first class honours in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.  He studied law at Chester Law School and was admitted as a Solicitor in 1993.

Before joining the firm in 2001, Jonathan was a lawyer in private practice with another leading international firm and, latterly, the Legal & Business Affairs Director for the interactive division of a leading media company. His practice focussed on commercial and IT law, data protection and regulation in the telecommunications and media sectors.
