Freshfields advises CVC Capital Partners on its equity investment in Premiership Rugby

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (‘Freshfields’) is advising CVC Capital Partners, one of the world’s leading private equity and investment advisory firms, on CVC Fund VII’s (‘CVC’) minority equity investment into Premiership Rugby. 

The agreement between CVC and Premiership Rugby comes twenty three years after Rugby Union was declared professional.

The investment is expected to complete in the first quarter of 2019 and represents the latest commitment by CVC to the sports, media and entertainment sector, a firm which has previously led on investments in MotoGP, Formula One Group, Stage Entertainment B.V. and Merlin Entertainments Group.

The Freshfields team is being led by partners Charles Hayes and David Brooks, together with senior associates Vincent Bergin and Alastair Brown. Partners Michele Davis, Jill Gatehouse, Chris Mort, Simon Priddis, Nicholas Squire and Rhodri Thomas, are also advising. 

Freshfields has advised CVC on various matters recently, including its sale of Sky Betting & Gaming to The Stars Group Inc., its acquisition alongside Messer of parts of Linde's America business, its acquisition of TMF Group, CVC and Carlyle Group backed Neptune on its acquisition of EPI, its acquisition of QA Group, its sale of Formula One Group to Liberty Media, and its acquisition, IPO of and subsequent reinvestment in, Ahlsell.
