Leading data privacy and security lawyer, Christine E. Lyon, joins Freshfields’ market-leading, global team

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP announced today that data privacy and security lawyer Christine E. Lyon has joined the firm as a partner in Silicon Valley.

The move responds to increased client demand for the firm’s global strength in crafting solutions to data privacy and security challenges arising in the contexts of transactions, breaches and other critical moments for clients, including litigation, enforcement proceedings and investigations—together with implementing board oversight, data governance and compliance programs and innovative compliance strategies.

Ms. Lyon will join UK-based Giles Pratt and Germany-based Norbert Nolte as a co-head of the firm’s global data privacy and security group. Mr. Pratt welcomed Ms. Lyon observing, “Chris has been recognized for years as a leader in the field. Adding her depth of practical experience and regulatory insights to our international data privacy and security capabilities reinforces the firm’s unparalleled offering for clients.”

The arrival of Ms. Lyon complements that of cybersecurity expert Brock Dahl, who joined the firm from the US National Security Agency in May.

Ms. Lyon has extensive experience counseling companies at all stages, from startups to large multinationals, throughout the lifespans of their products and services—particularly as they build privacy protections into cutting-edge B2B and B2C offerings that include artificial intelligence and data analytics, cloud-based services and connected products and services (Internet of Things), and in managing the related “Big Data” implications. She is skilled at helping clients navigate emerging data protection laws, such as the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on which she will work with Freshfields’ market leading data privacy team and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and in the implementation of mechanisms that facilitate international data flows and transfers. Her practice also involves advising clients on workplace and employee privacy issues, such as employee monitoring.

John Fisher, head of Freshfields’ technology and life sciences M&A practice in the US and co-founder of the firm’s Silicon Valley office, said: “We are proud to have Chris as our partner in Silicon Valley. Data is an increasingly regulated asset and for years Chris has been a thought leader in this space. She supports some of the most complex transactions globally and will add significant value to our clients going forward. Our clients demand thoughtful, practical advice and there is no one better to provide this than Chris.”

“I'm excited to join Freshfields, which combines the innovative drive and energy of Silicon Valley with an unparalleled global platform. I look forward to collaborating with my new colleagues around the world in helping our clients harness the value of their data while keeping pace with rapidly changing privacy laws both in the US and globally,” said Ms. Lyon.
