Freshfields launches UK Menopause Policy with paid benefits and signs Menopause Workplace Pledge

Global law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer ('Freshfields') has launched a Menopause Policy in the UK, with paid benefits to its people, effective from 1 February.

The firm’s introduction of a new policy in the UK will support colleagues who are experiencing the menopause. The policy sets out the support and benefits that are available to manage the menopause at work, including a paid menopause plan and time off for medical appointments.

Claire Wills, London Managing Partner, said: “The menopause is a natural stage in life that can have a wide range of physical and psychological effects, with 8 out of 10 having noticeable symptoms, and can impact many aspects of daily experience. The firm’s newly implemented paid benefits, alongside our dedicated wellbeing resources and guidance, further moves the needle on the firm’s progress to embedding an inclusive culture.”

Wendela von Munching, Global Chief People Officer, added: “It is important that our colleagues can feel empowered to ask for adjustments, can carry out their daily role in a safe working environment, and can have open discussions with colleagues and managers as part of an inclusive work culture.”

Additionally, Freshfields has become a signatory to the Menopause Workplace Pledge as part of the firm’s commitment to making the business a supportive and understanding place for employees going through the menopause.

It follows the firm’s recent implementation of family-forming benefits and partnership with Carrot Fertility, to offer inclusive benefits and financial support to UK, US and MENA colleagues with a lifetime allowance equivalent to $60,000 of care.

Notes to editors

Almost 900,000 women in the UK have quit their jobs due to the menopause. If people affected by menopause feel supported at work, it can help to increase staff retention, reduce recruitment costs, improve productivity, wellbeing, and ensure a more diverse workforce.
