Freshfields wins at the Global Competition Review Awards

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP (‘Freshfields’) has been awarded Litigation of the Year (Non-Cartel Defence) and Merger Control Matter of the Year (Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa) at the 2018 Global Competition Review Awards.

For Litigation of the Year (Non-Cartel Defence), Freshfields was recognised for its creative, strategic and innovative approach on Walter Merricks v Mastercard, at the end of which, the UK’s Competition Appeal Tribunal turned down the claimants’ application against Mastercard. Had the case gone ahead, it would have reportedly been the biggest damages claim ever seen in the UK.

The firm won Merger Control Matter of the Year (Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa) for its work on Maersk Line’s acquisition of Hamburg Süd, which saw the world’s seventh-largest container carrier purchased by world’s first largest and made a significant contribution to the ongoing consolidation in the field of container shipping. In addition to coordinating on the global deal, Freshfields guided Maersk Line on the conditional approvals in China, Korea and South Africa, as well as on the approvals in Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

The awards dinner was held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washginton, D.C., on 10 April 2018.
