Freshfields Expands US Financial Services Regulatory Practice with Partner Alison Hashmall

Global law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (Freshfields) announced today that leading financial services regulatory lawyer Alison Hashmall has joined the firm as a partner in New York.

Alison represents domestic and non-US banking organizations, fintech companies, financial sponsors, private equity funds and other financial institutions on a wide range of bank regulatory matters. A recognized expert in the Volcker Rule, Alison routinely advises clients on Bank Holding Company Act and related issues arising in connection with fund formation, fintech and fund transactions and capital raising activities.

Alison rounds out her core advisory and transactional practice by assisting clients and industry trade groups with advocacy on important bank regulatory issues and developments, such as those relating to capital and loss-absorbing capacity requirements and resolution and recovery planning, among others. She is a thought leader in these areas and is regularly quoted in the financial press.

Alison’s arrival follows the recent addition of financial services regulatory partner David Sewell and expands the firm’s US capabilities. David noted: “I have known and admired Alison for years and I couldn’t be more excited to have her joining the firm. Financial industry clients call on Freshfields to assist with their most complex regulatory matters, often with a cross-border dimension. Beyond her deep technical skills and industry experience, Alison brings a client-centered and commercial approach that always resonates. She will add tremendous value to our US financial regulatory team.”

US Managing Partner Sarah Solum added: “Our financial services regulatory practice is vital to the strength of our global platform. In addition to her well-recognized expertise in banking law, Alison’s history of helping to shape the debate on issues of critical importance to the financial industry not only deepens our US bench, but also strengthens the firm’s market-leading position in financial services regulation globally. We are delighted to have Alison on board.”

Alison stated: “I am thrilled to join Freshfields, and I know my clients will benefit from the services of a practice offering regulatory expertise in every major financial center across the globe. The industry is changing rapidly, and I can’t imagine a better platform than Freshfields to help clients navigate this evolving and dynamic US and global regulatory landscape.”

Alison is recognized by Chambers USA within the “Financial Services Regulation: Banking (Compliance)” practice area and is Vice Chair of the Systemically Important Financial Institutions Subcommittee for the American Bar Association Banking Law Committee. Prior to entering private practice, she clerked on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
